| 7th Grade Classes 7th Grade GLADCOW (Humanities Teacher: Les Hakey) WELCOME TO SECOND SEMESTER!!! *** Please check Powerschool for grades and missing work. *** * This week we will begin our new unit: Africa We begin to answer our Essential Questions: What about an African Country's geography and culture is most unique? * The first part of our unit will be to focus on South Africa. Students will be analyzing cultural conformity and conflict in the movie Invictus ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invictus_%28film%29 ) and by reading a novel based in South Africa in small groups. Students will also begin to research South African geography and culture using the textbook and other text resources. * DEAR continues daily as well and please encourage 20 minutes reading at home daily (or about 2 hours a week). Please complete DEAR Book Projects ASAP after finishing a good read! * This quarter we'll also continue Writers Write by creating a short story using Google Docs. The story elements of character, physical and time setting, story conflict and style of writing are determined by rolling a die from a selected list. The result is a story starter that is both entertaining and engaging. Students will have the option to work on a possible newspaper submission for www.youngwritersproject.org. If you are unfamiliar with the Young Writers Project, please review the website for more information. * A note on educational technology in the classroom: We are using Google Documents for paperless assignments. Students have a user name and password that they use to create and share documents on a secure website without having to print. |
| 7th Grade GLADCOW (Humanities Teacher: Angela Bauer) Our South Africa unit examines the following essential questions: What makes African geography and culture most unique? How do different cultures conflict when they come together? How do different cultures conform when they come together? Students will be selecting a novel set in South Africa and will be reading in literature circles for the next three weeks. We will also begin exploring the process of research as we prepare for a culminating research project on the African country of each student's choice. Additionally, we will focus on specific reading comprehension strategies: making connections, generating questions, making predictions, using senses, and making inferences and we will reflect upon how using these skills helps make our personal reading more meaningful and engaging. * * * * * Join the GLADCOW DCF Challenge! The class that reads the most DCF books this quarter will win a day off of GLADCOW and a great party! Five different students must contribute to the combined GLADCOW class total. | 8th Grade Spanish (Teacher: Señora Nevins) Homework this week - Study for vocabulary quiz on the Nosotros Vamos a la Ciudad list of words. Spanish 8 had a great time before Thanksgiving working on the Mi Ciudad project, which we will pick up and finish after Christmas. In groups, students wrote a script in Spanish for a light documentary on Randolph using the vocabulary list “Nosotros vamos a la ciudad. ” Before Thanksgiving the classes went out and filmed their documentary using Flip Cameras. Students will be making an iMovie out of their filming after the new year. In the meantime, we’re starting the Pueblo project this week which we do with the help of the art department. This project involves making small towns out of clay, which will be displayed in the RUHS media center before Christmas. This year Mr. Wiltse will help us out in the art room, showing us how to work with clay to make the pueblos. This tradition is practiced throughout Latin America and is part of the bigger indoor nativity scene that that people set up in their homes in December. We'll begin this project with a background discussion on the historical influences on Latin America. We know the Spanish conquerors came to Latin America in the late 1400s, but who influenced Spain over the course of the previous 2000 years? The Romans invaded the area now known as Spain in 206 B.C. and ruled for around 700 years. They left many bridges, buildings, arenas and theatres that are in use today. Beginning in 711 A.D , the Muslim Moors ruled the much of the country and the arts and sciences flourished and Muslims, Jews and Christians worked together in the society. These rulers also left their imprint on the architecture of Spain. The Catholic kings overthrew the Moors in the 1400s and united the provinces into one country. They built large churches sometimes over the existing mosques. It was during this time that the explorers and conquerors set out for America. These invaders brought disease and slavery to the indigenous people of the Americas, but they also brought their traditions, one of them being architecture. The Spanish influence on architecture can be seen in great Latin American towns and cities like Quito and Cuenca, Ecuador, Antigua, Guatemala and Cuzco, Perú. We continue to focus on present tense verb conjugations including regular AR, ER and IR verbs. Students should keep practicing Spanish 8 vocabulary as well as AR, ER, and IR verbs. Use quizlet.com to put some fun into your studying! Vocabulario 2: Nosotros vamos a la ciudad!
